Mel Torme was born in Chicago. He sang with the Coon-Sanders Orchestra at the age of four and was widely hailed as a child prodigy. He also acted in radio serials The Romance of Helen Trent and Jack Armstrong, the All-American Boy from 1933 until 1941. He was the teen idol of his generation after he appeared in Good News, the 1947 film musical.
