In an exclusive sneak peek of the Sister Wives Look Back: How It’s Going special, Kody Brown reveals the reasons behind his split with Christine Brown in 2021. According to Kody, Christine called him a coward because he was unwilling to end their marriage. He explains, “It’s because, well, you’re not really allowed.” Kody and Christine rewatch their 2021 conversation where Christine asked Kody if he wanted to be married to her, and after he asked her the same question, she replied, “No, I don’t want to be married to you.”
In the throwback clip, Kody said he’s “good with that” and claimed, “Nobody’s a prisoner here.” Kody elaborates that in the polygamist community, husbands are not allowed to just walk away from their marriages. He explains that there is a church authority channel that must be followed if a polygamist husband wants to end a relationship, and the choice is essentially taken away once a marriage commitment is made.
Christine also reflects on the breakup conversation, noting that it was the moment Kody “agreed I could go,” which made her feel empowered. Since their split, two of Kody’s three other marriages have also ended, with Janelle Brown announcing in December 2022 that she and Kody were separated, and Meri Brown confirming the following month that she was no longer with Kody.
