JoJo Siwa incorporated alcohol into her Pride Fest performances, a move inspired by her 21st birthday and supported by her grandmother, leading to surprised and enthusiastic reactions from audiences during her shows in cities like Los Angeles and London. Despite initial controversy, Siwa embraces this new element in her performances, involving her dancers in selecting the alcohol and aiming to contribute to the visibility of “Gay Pop” while acknowledging she’s not its inventor but hopes to play a significant role in its promotion.
JoJo Siwa revealed that her grandmother encouraged her to incorporate drinking alcohol into her Pride Fest performances, leading to a new element in her on-stage presence that has been met with enthusiastic audience reactions.
JoJo Siwa’s grandma seems to be quite the cool character. She’s all in for her granddaughter’s new stage antics. Imagine that, eh? Your grandma cheering you on as you decide to add a splash of alcohol to your performances. It’s not every day you hear something like that.
Siwa, only 21, spilled the beans on her “JoJo Siwa Now” podcast. It was July 8, a day that’s now a bit iconic, I guess. She talked about how this whole alcohol-on-stage idea came to life. It was during rehearsals, right after her 21st birthday bash. Siwa was like, “Why not take a shot before the show?” And grandma? She was all for it. “Go for it, JoJo,” she said. And so, it began.
The crowd? They lost their minds. Siwa drinking on stage during her gigs in Los Angeles, London, New York, Miami, and Chicago was a spectacle, to say the least. The first time she brought out a bottle, everyone was in shock. “Is this for real?” they wondered. Siwa’s response? Classic. “It’s Tito’s, b–h.”
And it didn’t stop there. Siwa’s dancers got in on the action, choosing the alcohol for each show. Siwa admitted it kept things interesting. But she laid down one rule: If they’re bringing out booze, they better bring out a chaser too.
Trying to carve her own path, Siwa spoke to Billboard about wanting to create “Gay Pop.” That was until she realized the term might’ve been a bit over the top. Pop music has long been a part of the LGBTQ+ community, after all. Siwa backtracked a bit, clarifying her stance to TMZ. She’s not trying to be the inventor of gay pop. Instead, she sees herself as a promoter, aiming to bring more attention to it.
Call her the “CMO of gay pop,” if you will. Siwa’s got big plans, including her debut EP, “Guilty Pleasure,” dropping on July 12. Plus, she’s teaming up with Jeff Collins, the mind behind “Dance Moms,” for a docuseries about her life. It’s clear Siwa’s not just the girl with the bow anymore. She’s evolving, and it’s quite the journey to watch.
