Tyler James Williams loves the simplicity of the slow-burn romance between his and Quinta Brunson’s characters on ABC sitcom Abbott Elementary, and hopes to see more conflict between them in future episodes.
Abbott Elementary’s Janine Teagues and Gregory Eddie have captured the hearts of viewers with their slow-burn love story. Actor Tyler James Williams, who stars as Gregory alongside Quinta Brunson’s Janine, agrees that the innocence of their courtship is what makes it so special. During an exclusive interview with Us Weekly at PaleyFest in Los Angeles on April 1, Williams said, “It’s the little moments and it’s reminding people that that’s what courting relationships are … it’s the little moments. That’s what I love most.”
Abbott Elementary, created by Brunson, premiered in December 2021. The sitcom, which follows a group of teachers at a public school in Philadelphia, also stars Sheryl Lee Ralph, Lisa Ann Walter, Janelle James, Chris Perfetti, and William Stanford Davis. The first season introduced Williams’ character as a substitute educator at Abbott, and Janine, a full-time teacher, took it upon herself to show him the ropes. Over time, the two started to develop romantic feelings for each other despite both dating other people.
In season 2, Gregory and Janine finally shared their first kiss while attending a teachers’ conference out of town. However, they quickly agreed to remain friends despite their lingering romantic feelings. Williams is hopeful to see more conflict between the two characters and believes that they have to learn how to handle conflict. Similarly, Ralph, who plays Barbara Howard on the show, is also a Janine and Gregory shipper. She believes that it’s important for the two characters to take their time and learn about themselves before pursuing a romantic relationship.
Abbott Elementary airs every Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET on ABC. According to Ralph, viewers can expect to see more of the characters’ families in the current season, and she believes that it will be a satisfying experience for viewers. For those who can’t get enough of Janine and Gregory’s love story, tuning in to Abbott Elementary is a must.
